This Memorial Day weekend, a weekend that is meant to honor the memories of fallen soldiers, ended with a bloodbath in Miami-Dade county. At the end of the holiday’s festivities, a police chase and firefight left one dead and seven more injured. Police were forced to shoot into an occupied car on Collins Avenue, killing the driver, after the driver of the vehicle struck a police officer with the car in the early morning hours.
The driver sped away from the scene, as officers chased the car down Collins Avenue on their bicylces. The officers were not Miami Beach police officer; they cmae from a different station that agreed to help out during Miami’s popular Urban Beach Weekend, which occurs over the Memorial Day holiday. According to one witness, the driver was shooting at the officers as he made his way down the street. Pedestrians fled and took cover as the chase made its way down Collins Avenue. When officers approached the car, the driver was found dead. Four pedestrians were struck during the chase, and police have not ruled out the possibility that they may have been struck by police bullets. Three officers, two from Miami Beach and one from Hialeah were injuried during the chase.
When police set up a perimeter to close off the scene of the accident, another accident occurred. A driver of a Mercedes Benz drove into the secured area and crashed into a police cruiser. Fortunately, no one was injured in the second crash, and the driver was arrested. While the police departments stated that the officers acted appropriately in both situations, the America Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is requesting a probe into the officer shootings due to the number of citizens injured.
