A pregnant owner of a West Miami-Dade boutique, Celeste & Co. Boutique, is now dead after a SUV crashed into her store in early August. Celeste Gaitan, 33, was killed after Pedro Ruiz lost control of his Chevrolet SUV and drove through the storefront. Ruiz and his female passenger were not seriously injured, but a friend of Gaitan, a woman in her twenties, was also killed in the accident. Gaitan, who was six months pregnant, was taken to Kendall Regional Hospital where doctors attempted to save her unborn child to no avail.
Gaitan and her friend were sitting on a bench outside of her store when the SUV drove straight towards them. The car crashed into the women, went through a display window and wound up mostly inside the boutique. The women died instantly upon impact. Ruiz and his passenger were both medically cleared at the scene. The investigation into what caused Ruiz to lose control of his vehicle is ongoing.
Pedro Ruiz is the father of a popular Miami salsa singer Rey Ruiz. The singer released a statement regarding the accident. He wrote, “I know that at such a painful moment, words are not enough, but I want to express on behalf of my family, my parents and myself, from the bottom of our hearts, our deepest and sincere condolences to the families of these people who accidentally lost their lives today.” The elder Ruiz was not charged in the accident.
