New App Aims To Prevent Teens From Texting While Driving

f630df83d4647484faa503bba83fa6c9.jpg Every teen with a cell phone and license knows the dangers of texting while driving. Yet, a recent CDC study revealed that almost 60 percent of high school seniors openly admit to texting while driving. Cell phone use increases a driver’s crash risk by 23 times. However, a new cell phone app is working to decrease the statistics. DriveScribe, which is free, takes a smart phone from a “detractor into a driving coach and rewards teens for safe driving.” The app blocks all mass communication, including text messages, emails and phone calls, both incoming and outgoing, while the teen is driving so that there are no distractions.

Sixteen-year-old Bianca Lopez has already downloaded the new app onto her phone. She admits that she doesn’t want to follow the path most teens her age head down. “You start off doing everything by the book and after a while you start going over speed limit,” she said. Instead, she relies on DriveScribe to monitor her daily driving. So far, she hasn’t had any violations.

Creator Will England said that the device is aimed at helping teens become familiar with the rules of the road and at helping them develop “smart habits from the get go” because car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers. England equates to texting while driving to drunk driving. “Just sending a text message while driving down a highway is the equivalent of driving blind down the length of a football field, it’s like driving drunk,” he has stated.
