Van Crashes Through Wall Of Jacksonville Home, 1 Teen Dead

Seventeen-year-old Janay Jackson was asleep in her bedroom when a van crashed through the wall and crashed into her. The driver of the van ran the stop sign at the end of South Barnes Road and went through the lawn and into the house. Janay’s mother, Felicia, heard the crash, ran to her daughter’s room and found her daughter still alive. Janay later died at the hospital. The driver was taken to Shands Jackson with serious injuries. Police are looking into whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.

Janay’s mother watched numerous drivers run the stop sign near her home–one driver struck her neighbor’s garage door and another driver crashed into a light pole–and feared an accident like this would happen. Fearing that a car would hit Janay’s bedroom, Felicia had the bedroom wall reinforced and requested that the city put flashing lights on the stop sign or install a stoplight at the intersection. Felicia said the city denied her requests, claiming that the city told her that a tragedy must occur before any changes would be implemented. Conversely, the City claims it hasn’t received any requests in the past 25 years for a traffic study or for any traffic improvements at that particular intersection.

While Janay’s bedroom wall is being reconstructed, those closest to the teen are trying to figure out how to rebuild their lives without her. One of Janay’s teachers, Sheri Porubski said, “”The kids closest to her, who had sat with her and built up dreams with her over the last three years were devastated. The wail was just unbelievable. I don’t think I have ever heard such mourning.” Janay, an honors student, was hoping to one day be a nurse that helped children with juvenile diabetes and was very involved in community service.
