In November 2011, a Homestead City detective was driving his city-owned Chevy Silverado pickup truck when he crashed into the back of a Chevy Malibu. The force of the crash from the Silverado forced the Malibu into the back of another car. One of the cars was carrying children and six people were injured in the crash. According to the police report, at least one of the passengers was taken to Homestead Hospital from the scene of the crash.
After an investigation, Homestead City determined that detective Philip Harris was at fault for the crash. The six victims filed claims against the city; one passenger claimed he suffered “neck pain” from the crash, but all other injuries remain unclear. The Homestead City Council members approved the $68,000 settlement offer to the victims.
