When a Toyota Prius crossed the centerline on California’s rural Highway 50 on Saturday, it struck a minivan that was carrying children. The crash left three people injured and four dead. The driver of the Prius, his eight-year-old son, and another passenger were killed and a ten-year-old riding in the Prius was hospitalized with severe injuries. Of the five riding in the minivan, a four-year-old girl was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. The driver and her adult passenger were not injured. One-year-old twin boys were riding in the minivan, but were not injured.
A California Highway Patrol spokesman, Office John Frizzell stated that weather conditions were clear and “we don’t know what caused the Prius to cross into oncoming traffic. There are an infinite number of possibilities.” Investigators are trying to determine how fast the drivers were going, but the information is going to take several days to compute. For now, the investigation continues.
