Faulty Sensor Leads Nissan to Recall Five of its 2013 Models

Earlier this week Nissan announced that it is recalling five of its 2013 model vehicles in the United States. A defective sensor in the cars could permanently deactivate the front-seat passenger airbag. This recall includes the Altima midsize car, Pathfinder SUV, Sentra compact, Leaf electric car, and Infiniti JX35 SUV. The Altima is Nissan’s top-selling car. Over 49,000 Altimas have been sold this year already.

At this time Nissan says that it is unsure of the actual number of vehicles affected by the recall. The problem exists in a sensor found in the front passenger’s seat. This sensor detects the passenger’s weight and turns off the air bags if a child is on board. The defective sensor can turn the air bags off permanently. Nissan announced that its dealers will inspect the recalled vehicles in April and replace the faulty sensors free of charge if necessary.
