A twenty-seven-year-old woman died after she was pinned against a wall outside of her church Tuesday afternoon. Catalina Gomez Pelaez arrived at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Southwest Miami-Dade around 4:30 p.m. to pick up a relative’s children. Nuris Better, seventy-three, was driving her SUV in front of the church school located at Southwest 112th Street and 139th Avenue when she lost control, said Miami-Dade police.
Better’s vehicle left the road and pinned Pelaez against a wall. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue had to cut down a palm tree to move the SUV and free Pelaez, but it was too late. Pelaez was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese, Mary Ross Agosta, issued a statement that the children were not in danger at any time when this accident occurred. The children were safe in a nearby building. Better has not been charged at this time and police are still unsure of how the accident occurred. Investigations continue at this time.
