Driver Dead After Collision with Bus Carrying Schoolchildren

A woman was killed on Interstate 10 in eastern New Orleans Thursday morning when her automobile crossed the median and collided with a charter bus carrying schoolchildren from northwestern Florida. According to New Orleans police and Kingdom Coach Company, the Alabama-based operator of the bus, none of the children were injured in the accident. The driver and two other passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries. A responding firefighter also suffered a minor hand injury.

As of Thursday afternoon, the name of the woman who was killed had not been released. She was said to be operating a Honda Accord travelling eastbound when she lost control on the rain-slick highway. She crossed into the westbound lane and was struck by the Kingdom Coach Company bus. There were two other buses travelling in the westbound lane that managed to avoid hitting the Accord. Bill Henderson, the driver of one of those buses, stated that he saw the woman lose control and start spinning. He said he was able to avoid contact with the car, but there was no opportunity for the bus behind him to avoid the crash. Henderson said the driver of that Kingdom Coach Company bus safely steered the bus off of the highway after the collision, bringing it to a stop without rolling over.

The students and adult chaperons on the bus were travelling from Walker Elementary School in Crestview, Florida to the zoo in New Orleans that morning. Interstate 10 was closed down for most of the morning in both directions, but both lanes were reopened by mid-afternoon.
