A forty-nine-year-old woman was struck and seriously injured while riding her bike Sunday evening in suburban West Palm Beach. Investigators are now seeking the public’s help in finding the driver of the vehicle that struck the woman and then left the scene. Ana Ayala was crossing Sherwood Forest Boulevard near Basil Drive on her blue Schwinn bike when she was hit. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera in a crash report released this morning, investigators believe the vehicle that struck Ayala was a gold four-door Hyundai Sonata, model year 1999 to 2004 that was travelling north.
Ayala was about half a mile away from her home around 9 p.m. Sunday when the crash occurred. Ayala was found lying in the road when rescue crews arrived on scene. She was transported to Delray Medical Center and she remains in critical condition. Investigators were able to determine the vehicle’s description that struck Ayala based on a gold side mirror found at the crash scene. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s report, the automobile will likely now have windshield damage and the yellow plastic covering one of the car’s lights may also be damaged.
