Three Emergency Responders Sent to Hospitals After Second Crash on I-95

A paramedic from West Palm Beach Fire Rescue and two Florida Highway Patrol troopers were transported to local hospitals Sunday night after a crash involving three automobiles. According to FHP, the accident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday on Interstate 95 North near Belvedere Road. FHP Sgt. Chris Fletcher said that the paramedic and two troopers were part of emergency crews responding to a two-vehicle crash that had closed one lane of traffic.

A driver was attempting to merge into another lane of traffic when the driver lost control of his vehicle and struck three cars, including an FHP automobile. Fletcher said that one trooper was struck after he exited his vehicle and another trooper was hit and injured while he was still inside his patrol car. A Fire Rescue paramedic was injured by flying debris. One trooper and the paramedic were transported to Good Samaritan Medical Center. The other trooper was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center. According to Fletcher, none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The driver who struck the troopers was also transported to St. Mary’s as a precaution.

The initial crash that rescue crews were responding to caused injuries to a child. That child was transported to an area hospital. No update was immediately available on the child’s condition. According to FHP, four lanes of traffic remained blocked as of 10:15 p.m. Sunday.

Emergency response crews often face a high risk of danger at the scene of a prior crash. As occurred in this case, lanes of traffic are often blocked by these crashes, causing drivers to alter their direction of travel to avoid the blocked lanes. These drivers may cause additional crashes by not staying fully alert to their surroundings, speeding, or operating a motor vehicle that has some sort of mechanical defect. If an additional crash occurs, police, ambulance personnel, and fire rescue face serious injuries because they are often outside of the protection of their own automobiles and are not prepared to react quickly to avoid being hit by another vehicle.
