Excessive Speed Believed to be the Cause of Fatal North Miami Crash

One person died and at least three others were injured when a car crashed into the entrance of Miami Dade College’s Liberty City campus Tuesday morning. Classes were cancelled for the day at the Carrie P. Meek Entreprenuerial Education Center, located at 6300 NW Seventh Avenue. According to college spokesman Juan Mendieta, classes are expected to resume this evening. Classes for the fall semester began on Monday.

Police closed down a section of Northwest Seventh Avenue during the morning to investigate and clear all of the debris. According to witnesses, the silver Lincoln sedan was speeding when it spun out of control and crashed into the campus entrance, barely missing bystanders at a nearby bus stop. The car then burst into flames. Pieces of the car ended up all over the sidewalk and street.

One witness ran to the car to see if he could offer assistance. Rodney Payne told CBS4 that he guessed the accident occurred because the driver attempted to miss hitting the people at the bus stop. Payne said, “He veered and tried to turn away from them but at the rate of speed he was going it caused the car to spin” and it was too late for the driver to regain control. One of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, another occupant ran off, and the others were transported to Ryder Trauma Medical Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. According to Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes, one of the injured occupants is in critical condition. Police have detained the driver, who ran off after the accident, but later checked himself into Jackson Hospital.
