Pickup Driver Runs Stop Sign in Northern Florida Causing the Deaths of Four People

Cross-City-crash.jpg Four people are dead in northern Florida, including two teenagers, after a driver ran a stop sign, reports the Florida Highway Patrol. Eddie Pinner Lazo, thirty-five, was operating his 2001 Ford pickup truck early Sunday morning in Cross City. According to witnesses, Lazo drove through a stop sign in the town 50 miles west of Gainesville. Lazo proceeded forward and struck a 1992 GMC pickup truck with four individuals inside.

Upon impact, Lazo’s truck overturned, partially ejecting him from the vehicle. He was in critical condition when he was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital. The driver and two of the passengers in the GMC truck that was hit were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. State troopers identified the victims as Rayford Lee Enfinger, fifty-one, Julius Jeramia Micale, thirty-five, and Levi Micale, thirteen. The third passenger in the vehicle, Katie Rae Enfinger, fifteen, died in an ambulance en route to an awaiting helicopter.

The failure to obey a traffic signal can lead to deadly consequences, as it unfortunately did in this situation. Intersections are often some of the scariest places on the roadways. Drivers may misestimate how much room they have to cross the road or are unable to see oncoming vehicles and this can lead to devastating collisions that cause serious injuries or even death. Although it is unclear at this time what caused Lazo to run through the stop sign, it is clear that his decision affected not only those in the other vehicle, but all of their family and friends.
