Automobile-Pedestrian Crash Takes the Life of Three Year Old

A three-year-old Lake Worth girl was killed Monday afternoon when she was struck by a pickup truck not far from her home. Priscila Perez-Gaspar was walking on a sidewalk alongside her babysitter on Kirk Road, just south of Lake Worth Road, around 2:45 p.m. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, this is when fifty-six-year-old Steven W. Barnes, of Lake Worth, lost control of his 2006 GMC Sierra and struck the little girl. Perez-Gaspar was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera stated that Barnes remained on scene after the accident, but was not taken into custody. Investigators are trying to determine what caused the crash and are considering the possibility that Barnes suffered a medical episode before he hit the girl. According to a sheriff’s report, Barnes was driving south on Kirk Road when his vehicle swerved out of control and traveled across the roadway. The truck went through a residential parking lot, striking the girl and a parked car. It then went through shrubs, a fence, and a second parking lot before coming to rest. A down street sign, a shoe, and a trail of blood were among the remnants of the accident. While deputies were investigating the accident, people stood by in a state of shock.

Thirty-four-year-old Anthony Shepherd rushed to aid the little girl after he heard the crash from inside his apartment. He stated, “I never thought I’d see something like that in my life.” Shepherd immediately dialed 911 and remained by the girl’s side as he waited for help to arrive. Priscila’s mother arrived on scene within a few minutes. Shepherd drove Priscila’s mother to the hospital, while paramedics rushed Priscila to St. Mary’s Hospital.
