One Dead, Three Injured in Allapattah Drag Racing Accident

A three-car crash said to be caused by drag racing left one dead and three hospitalized in Allapattah Saturday morning. According to a local television station, red-light cameras present at the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and 17th Avenue show a black Nissan and a green Mercedes speeding through the intersection. The Nissan cleared the intersection and sped away, but the Mercedes crashed into another vehicle, killing the driver. Police would not confirm that information.

Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignacio Carroll said, “It was a pretty horrific accident. The impact destroyed one car.” The crash occurred on Northwest 36th Street when the Mercedes hit a gold Nissan attempting to turn from 17th Avenue onto 36th Street. According to the Miami-Dade police, the impact caused both cars to hit a Miami-Dade Transit Bus, which was carrying twelve people.

The driver of the gold Nissan was not believed to be involved in the drag racing. That driver was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. When rescue crews arrived, the driver and passenger in the Mercedes were stuck inside the vehicle. They were both extricated by firefighters who used the Jaws of Life. Lt. Carroll stated that both individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. A later report revealed that they were in stable condition. A female bus passenger sustained minor injuries and was also transported to Jackson Memorial. The bus driver received treatment on the scene. None of the other bus passengers sustained serious injuries. Police have not released the names of anyone involved in this incident.
