South Florida Man Convicted In November For Fatal Hit-and-Run Will Receive Sentence Today

Harvey Abraham, a South Florida man, will be sentenced today after being convicted in November of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and tampering with evidence. Abraham was convicted of killing eleven-year-old Ashley Valdes in a hit-and-run accident in January 2009. Abraham was driving a pick-up truck down SW 80th Street at 149th Avenue. Valdes was crossing the street after a bus driver dropped her off on the wrong side of the road in Kendall. This is when Abraham fatally struck Valdes and continued driving.

Police found Abraham about a week later when he was attempting to get his damaged truck repaired. He told authorities that he thought he had hit a dog. Valdes’ mother, Adonay Rosete, does not believe Abraham thought he hit a dog. She believes that he knew he hit a human being and chose to continue driving without rendering any aid to her young daughter. Rosete will read an impact statement at Abraham’s sentencing, expressing her grief and hopefully achieving some level of closure. Abraham faces up to thirty-five years in prison for the crime.

Valdes’ death led to the creation of “Ashley Alerts.” These are text messages that are sent to Miami-Dade county residents, alerting them to crimes like hit-and-run accidents as well as other traffic and safety related issues. The intersection where Valdes’ was killed is now equipped with a traffic signal and a part of the road was renamed for her.
