Authorities continue investigations into a deadly wrong-way crash that occurred on the Sawgrass Expressway on Sunday, November 17. The young woman who caused the crash allegedly posted a message on Twitter that expressed how drunk she was just hours before the collision occurred. Twenty-year-old Kayla Mendoza got into her 2004 Hyundai Sonata and entered the Sawgrass Expressway traveling eastbound on the westbound side of the highway around 1:45 a.m. that Sunday. Florida Highway Patrol reported that after entering the highway, Mendoza slammed into a 2012 Toyota Camry driven by Kaitlyn Ferrante near University Drive.
Ferrante’s passenger, Marisa Catronio, was pronounced dead at the accident scene. Ferrante was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but died of her injuries days after the crash. According to FHP, Mendoza remained hospitalized in serious condition as of Friday, November 22. Following the crash, Marisa Catronio’s father, Gary Catronio, expressed his hope that someday every highway access ramp will have spikes or flashing warning signals to alert wrong-way drivers.
Since the accident, authorities have taken a closer look at Mendoza’s Twitter page. Just hours before the deadly collision, Mendoza allegedly tweeted “2 drunk 2 care.” There were also a number of other posts discovered on Mendoza’s Twitter feed that referred to drug usage. It is unclear at this time whether Mendoza was the one who posted any of the tweets. News of the tweets broke Thursday as friends, family, and other individuals gathered for Catronio’s viewing service and a candlelight vigil held for Ferrante.
