Pedestrian Hit and Killed by Car on S. Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach

A man died in West Palm Beach Thursday evening after he was apparently hit by a car on South Dixie Highway. City police stated that a section of South Dixie Highway south of Forest Hill Boulevard was closed due to the accident. Cars traveling in the area were directed off of South Dixie Highway onto Olive Avenue.

A car was traveling south on South Dixie Highway around 7:00 p.m. Thursday when it struck a man who was crossing the road at Maddox Street, between the Economy Inn and Don Ramon’s Restaurant. Investigator Karl Seifel of the West Palm Beach Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Division stated that the man was struck as he was crossing the road from the east. According to a witness, a PalmTran bus may have been involved in the accident. However, Seifel stated that the bus may have just been passing through the area at the same time as the pedestrian was struck.

Authorities are investigating and trying to determine if the bus played any role in the accident. Seifel further stated that the driver who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene of the accident. It was determined that the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that the driver will not face charges. The pedestrian has not yet been identified and it is unclear whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time he was hit.

Unfortunately, pedestrians face a high risk of danger every time that they are close to a roadway, especially when they are at or near an intersection. Drivers can lose control of their automobiles and strike pedestrians for many reasons, including defective parts, speeding, distracted driving, or because of the influence of substances like drugs or alcohol. In other cases, drivers are simply unable to see pedestrians because it was dark outside or because the pedestrian was walking out into the roadway from a hidden area.
