Maryland Woman Survives Car Crash that Sent her Vehicle over Chesapeake Bay Bridge

 A twenty-two-year-old Maryland woman saved her own life Friday night after a collision involving a tractor trailer and two other vehicles, including her own, sent her and her car over the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and down forty feet into the water. According to Anne Arundel County Fire Battalion Chief Steve Thompson, the woman was in critical condition with non-life-threatening injuries when she was rescued and airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

The collision occurred just before 8:30 p.m. Friday evening in the eastbound lanes of the bridge, which connects the mainland of Maryland with Maryland’s Eastern Shore. According to Thompson, the crash occurred at approximately a quarter-mile onto the bridge. The water that the twenty-two-year-old woman fell into was about eight feet deep. The woman managed to swim and climb her way onto a piling of stones around the bridge support. Someone in a boat nearby saw the accident and stayed by the woman’s side until rescue crews arrived. Thompson said the woman was then transported by boat and helicopter and at the time of her rescue she was conscious, alert, and asking questions. No one else suffered injuries in the accident. The accident was investigated for some time, which led to the shutdown of the eastbound lanes of the bridge.
