SUV Crashes into Keys Restaurant, Twelve-Year-Old Boy Killed

A twelve-year-old Maryland boy is dead after a crash on Cudjoe Key Thursday afternoon. Dwayne Hamilton of Randallstown, Maryland was in the front passenger seat of Albert Brown’s SUV when Brown lost control and crashed into a restaurant. Brown, a sixty-eight-year-old Miami Gardens resident, slammed his 2001 Nissan SUV into the Square Grouper restaurant around 4 p.m. Thursday. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Hamilton was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, but he “was killed upon impact with the building.”

Troopers stated that Brown was travelling north on U.S. 1 in his SUV when he drove onto the road’s east shoulder without slowing down. Brown then proceeded to strike a “caution” sign, lose control of his vehicle, swerve back onto the road in an effort to correct the direction of his vehicle, drive back onto the shoulder, and into the parking lot of the restaurant. Brown’s SUV struck the restaurant in its southwest corner. The three other passengers in the SUV were Melanie Brown, thirty-four, Andy Brown, forty-two, and Alana Brown, two, all of Randallstown.

Andy Brown was airlifted to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center in Miami with critical injuries. Melanie and Alana Brown did not sustain critical nor fatal injuries and were treated at Lower Keys Medical Center. Albert Brown, the driver, was not injured. The death of Hamilton became the thirteenth traffic fatality of this year south of Florida City.
