Porsche Sought in Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash that Killed New Orleans Police Officer

An off-duty New Orleans police officer was killed early Sunday morning by a hit-and-run driver. Police officials who worked with Officer Rodney Thomas praised Thomas as an exemplary officer who was well-liked and respected by his coworkers and people in the community. Thomas was on Interstate 10 around 1 a.m. Sunday when he was involved in a minor accident. According to police, Thomas exited his vehicle to check on the other driver. Thomas was struck by the hit-and-run driver sometime after he got out of his car.

Police found parts of the vehicle that hit Thomas at the scene. Officers are looking for a late model white Porsche Panamera with damage to its right front side. Thomas was a fifty-two year old married father of two who had been with the New Orleans Police Department since 2005. Paul Noel, police department 2nd District Commander, said in a press release that “Rodney was a well-liked, hard-working and dedicated police officer . . . He was the type of officer to ‘circle back’ after meeting people and assisting them with a problem, just to check in with them again to make sure they were okay.” Police Chief Ronal Serpas did not know Thomas very well, but was told that not only was Thomas a “cops’ cop,” but he was also the “peoples’ cop.” The Crimestoppers organization is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in this case.
