A fifty-two-year-old Melbourne resident was identified Monday as the victim of a fatal Boynton Beach area crash. Margaret Avitt was a passenger in a 2004 GMC van traveling northbound on Interstate 95 on Sunday morning. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, the van was struck from behind around 10 a.m. just south of the Woolbright Road exit. The impact caused the van to veer off the road and run into trees. When rescue crews arrived on scene, they had to extricate Avitt from the van with the Jaws of Life. She was transported to Delray Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.
The FHP report revealed that the driver of the van was sixty-year-old Mark Bernard Alicandro. He was transported to Delray Medical Center for treatment after the accident. The vehicle that struck the van was a 2006 Audi. The two people inside that car were twenty-six-year-old Warren Henry Thomann and twenty-four-year-old Randi Faye Skilton. Thomann was driving the car. Both suffered only minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital. According to the report, everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt. Authorities do not suspect alcohol was involved. Charges are pending.

Rear-end collisions can often be extremely devastating and tragic automobile accidents. Depending upon the speed of the vehicle that causes the crash and the exact point of impact, life changing injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, or even wrongful death can result. Here, speed was likely a factor that caused the death of a passenger because the accident occurred on a major interstate highway. Even if the driver of the Audi was not speeding, his speed was likely high enough to cause serious harm.
